Industrial Relations Society's of New South Wales and Newcastle are affiliated with the national body, the Australian Labour and Employment Relations Association (ALERA). Membership is transferable across state and territory societies, although benefits may vary between branches.


Annual Conference
Each year, IRSNSW hosts a major annual conference in May, bringing together a diverse line-up of guest speakers from across business, government, unions, and academia. It is a key opportunity for members to exchange ideas, hear insights on the latest developments, and connect with others in the field.

Practitioner Development Day
This full-day event is designed to sharpen your practical skills. Participants hear directly from practitioners about recent case law and modern approaches to managing industrial relations matters.

One-Day Workshops
Often held in collaboration with the Fair Work Commission, these educational sessions focus on targeted topics. Past themes include:

  • Enterprise Bargaining
  • How to Prevent and Resolve Workplace Bullying

Twilight Seminars & Webinars
Held three to four times a year, these sessions feature expert speakers exploring current and emerging issues. Previous topics have included:

  • Vaccinated to Work?
  • Investigation of Workplace Misconduct
  • Update on Supply Chain Liability
  • Getting Your Agreement Approved by the Commission

Advocacy in Industrial Relations Commission Course
Organised by the UTS Business School, this course offers valuable skills for appearing in tribunals and commissions. Members benefit from a discounted rate.

Networking Events
Throughout the year, we host a range of opportunities to connect with fellow members, including:

  • ‘Meet the Members’ Function at the Fair Work Commission
  • Other informal gatherings to build relationships across the profession

Patron’s Lunch
A unique annual event where our Patron, Anna Booth, interviews a notable figure in industrial relations over lunch, offering personal insights into their work and contributions to the field.

The Newcastle Branch is particularly known for delivering high-quality events with prominent speakers. Recent presenters have included:
